The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection resort, as affectionately called the 'Pink Palace of the Pacific', is located in the heart of Waikiki Beach on the Island of Oahu in Honolulu, Hawaii, US. Opened in February 1927, the iconic pink-hued resort is spread over 14 acres of lush tropical setting.

The Royal Hawaiian recently underwent a $70m renovation called 'Inspiration Renewed'. Recently completed, the extensive project included refurbishment of the historic and tower wings rooms, suites, common areas, dining outlets and more.

The Luxury Collection resort is operated by Starwood Hotels & Resorts and owned by Kyo-ya Hotels & Resorts, LP.

Royal Hawaiian contractors

The architectural design for the hotel's historic wing was provided by WCIT Architects, and Philpotts and Associates provided the interior design.

The tower wing renovation interior design was provided by NEXT Design.

Accommodation, meeting and conference facilities

The Royal Hawaiian offers 529 rooms including 35 suites. The suites are categorised as Tower Ocean Suite, Kamehameha Suite, Spa Suite, Royal Ocean Front Suite and Garden Suite.

Guest amenities include air-conditioning, flat screen television with remote control, in-room movies, mini refrigerator and coffee maker. The rooms are also provided with in-room safe, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, electronic room lock system, bathrobes, complimentary bottled water, shampoo, conditioner and other toiletries and high-speed internet access.

The hotel has five event and meeting facilities. The 7,800ft² Monarch Room can be used for both indoor and outdoor functions. The Coconut Grove is a 33,000ft² courtyard which accommodates up to 1,200 people. The Regency Room is a banquet room which offers 4,032ft² of area and can accommodate large and small gatherings.

The 9,990ft² Ocean Lawn is located on Waikiki beach. With panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean and Diamond Head, the lawn can be used for weddings and other functions.

The Monarch Terrace accommodates up to 300 people. All the meeting rooms are equipped with the best audio visual facilities.

The spa

The hotel has a 7,000ft² primer garden spa named Abhasa. It offers treatments in a serene tropical garden setting.

Other facilities

The resort has more than 66,000ft²of beach area. There resort offers one fresh water pool, which offers serenity and relaxation and the Helumoa Playground area which offers two fresh water swimming pools and water slide which is 15ft high and 70ft long.

The Royal Hawaiian also has a fitness centre located on the ground floor of the resort.

Dining facilities

Azure Restaurant features the freshest and most flavorful seafood cuisine under the culinary inspiration of Chef de Cuisine Jon Matsubara. The restaurant is open for dinner only from 5.30 to 9pm.

Surf Lanai offers classic breakfast and delightful fresco lunches with island flare in a casual dining setting on Waikiki Beach. The restaurant is open for breakfast from 6.30 to 11am. and lunch from 11.30am to 2pm.

The legendary Mai Tai Bar is a cool retreat on the sand of Waikiki featuring a full drink menu, appetisers and live nightly entertainment. Mai Tai Bar is open from 10am to 10pm.

In addition, a weekly special event luau called 'Aha'Aina is available on Monday only from 5.30 to 9pm.

In-room dining menus are also available 24-hours a day.


Matson Navigation (Matson) developed The Royal Hawaiian by investingĀ  $4m and opened the luxurious resort in February 1927. The resort originally had 400 rooms with Spanish-Moorish architectural design under the supervision of Warren and Wetmore from New York.

The hotel closed in 1941 after the Pearl Harbour attack during the second World War. It was leased to the US Navy in 1942 for rest and recreation purposes. The navy vacated the hotel after the Second World War and the hotel underwent a $2m renovation project followed by a grand reopening in January 1947.

Recently, The Royal Hawaiian closed from June 2008 for restoration work and opened in March 2010.
